The Shattering & The Shroud
Faced with a predatory threat known as Gar De Shah—capable of tracking the living through connected trade routes and conditions of ruin—ancient Agromancers enacted The Shattering. They intentionally severed the geography into isolated pockets separated by impenetrable walls of grey mist: The Shroud.
The Shroud is not evil or hungry; it is a disorienting protective barrier that disrupts the relationship between direction, distance, recognition, and memory. A traveler without proper guidance can walk an hour and emerge miles away at a landmark from the wrong direction.
Life in the Valleys
- Strict Roadcraft: Towns maintain marked ruts, warded stone posts, and boundary bells to safely guide travelers through the fog.
- Lantern-Bearers: Respected guilds carrying specialized Grave-Wax lanterns capable of cutting through the memory-erasing effects of the boundary mist.
- Blind-Draft Teams: Work animals trained to ignore deceptive visual cues and rely solely on smell, grade, and road memory.
- Community Over Feudalism: In isolated valleys, competence matters more than titles. The person who maintains a bridge or shelter is central to everyone's survival.
